Karsu in het SJU Huis op 12 december 2009

Het is een frêle meisje dat achter de piano kruipt tijdens een showcase op de Dag van de Wereldmuziek in Utrecht. In het SJU Huis zien zo’n 100 mensen ‘uit het vak’ het grote talent Karsu Dönmez dat begeleid wordt door een al even jong ogend meisje op viool. Karsu opent met een eigen nummer. Aan haar pianospel hoor je goed dat ze klassiek geschoold is, terwijl ze haar stem soms prachtig kan forceren als was ze een geroutineerde jazzdiva. Een volgend nummer kondigt ze aan als een Azerbeidjaans liedje over uit elkaar gaan. Na fraai piano/vioolduet als intro zingt ze dramatisch en subtiel om daarna weer een eigen nummer te zingen over meisjes die vroeg dood gaan. ‘Mijn moeder houdt niet van dit liedje’, zegt ze. Het is wederom een gedragen nummer, maar dankzij haar intense voordracht houdt Dönmez de aandacht moeiteloos vast. Ondanks haar jonge leeftijd weet ze met haar spel en zang een verhaal te vertellen dat van het begin tot het einde blijft boeien. De performance van Dönmez overtuigt vooral door het enorme lef waarmee de jonge zangeres zich presenteert, zonder dat dit op enig moment irritatie oproept of een maniertje wordt. Dat is knap. Enkele maanden geleden zag ik haar optreden met de Turks/Canadese muzikant Mercan Dede en ook daarbij bewoog de jonge zangeres met zichtbaar gemak op het podium in een totaal andere setting dan het miniconcert in het SJU Huis. Haar talent is onmiskenbaar.
Rojin: Koerdische etno pop
Rojin betekent zowel ‘zon’ als ‘licht’. “Net als de indianen geven Koerden hun kinderen graag poëtische namen die te maken hebben met de natuur”, legt de Koerdische zangeres Rojin uit. “Namen als rivier, jager, gazelle. Want veel Koerden zijn traditioneel en leven nog dicht bij de natuur.
In haar muziek komt die poëtische traditie ook tot uitdrukking. Zoals op haar eerste album uit 2000. Rojin schrijft veel teksten zelf en componeert ook de muziek. “Vooral heel vroeg in de ochtend of ’s avonds laat. Het liefst als het echt stil is om me heen”. In haar songs stelt de populaire zangeres problemen van de Turkse cultuur aan de orde. “Onder meer over vrouwen, gevoelens en liefde. Aangezien het leven in Turkije zwaar is, is de liefde ook moeilijk. Vooral als je Koerdisch bent, als je naam Rojin is, is het leven niet gemakkelijk”.
De basis voor haar muziek werd gelegd op de conservatoria in de zuidoostelijke stad Adana, waar ze opgroeide, en in de hoofdstad Ankara. Rojin zingt en schrijft zowel in Turks als in Koerdisch. Ze typeert haar muziek als etno pop - met traditionele Koerdische instrumenten als de langhalsluit, de rebab, een tweesnarig strijkinstrument, de davul-trom - en haar vocale stijl als een fusion van nieuw en klassiek.
Een voorkeur voor songs in Koerdisch of Turks wil ze niet uitspreken. “Dat is net zo moeilijk als kinderen vragen of ze meer van hun vader of hun moeder houden. Ik houd van beide talen”.De Turkse staatsideologie heeft het bestaan van de Koerdische taal en cultuur lang ontkend. In 2003 arresteerde de politie haar, omdat ze een folk-song in het Koerdisch had gezongen tijdens het Dogu Beyazit festival. Begin 2009 opende de regering een tv-kanaal TRT-6 dat alleen maar in het Koerdisch uitzendt. “Ik vond het een goed initiatief”, zegt Rojin. “Daarom deed ik mee met mijn eigen programma. Maar omdat ik gecensureerd werd en werd behandeld als een potentiële crimineel heb ik de samenwerking verbroken”.

Serkan Çağrı: Nooit honger als je klarinet speelt
“Natuurlijk werd ik muzikant.”, zegt Serkan Çağrı, geboren in een muzikaal nest als zoon van naar Turkije geëmigreerde ouders, vlakbij de Griekse en Bulgaarse grens. “Mijn ouders maakten instrumenten, mijn vader speelde klarinet. Bij ons thuis waren meer muziekinstrumenten te vinden dan speelgoed,” vertelt de inmiddels wereldberoemde klarinettist lachend. “Mijn eerste speelgoed was zelfs een klarinet! Dit instrument was bepalend in onze streek. We hebben er zelfs een gezegde over: als je klarinet kunt spelen, zul je nooit honger hebben.”
De Serkan Çağrı klarinet
Serkan Çağrı bespeelt de klarinet niet alleen vaardig, hij publiceerde er ook over. Zijn boek ‘Techniques of performing G clarinet’ is te vinden in muziekwinkels. “Ik ontdekte dat alle Turkse klarinettisten de G-klarinet bespeelden, terwijl de F-noot hierbij een probleem vormde. Daarom heb ik een concept ter verbetering bedacht.” De G-klarinet wordt voornamelijk gebruikt voor Turkse en Griekse folkmuziek. Çağrı zette zijn verbetering ervan door, en heeft nu als eerste klarinettist ter wereld een eigen klarinetmodel: het Serkan Çağrı Model.
Het Balkan jazz project
Een van zijn vele muzikale projecten gaat over Balkan jazz waarin Çağrı samenwerkt met de Bulgaarse zangeres Yildiz Ibrahimova, die bekend staat als stemkunstenares. “Zij is de enige zangeres die met haar stem het geluid van de klarinet kan imiteren,” vertelt Çağrı over hun samenwerking. “Ze is heel bekend, en ik bewonderde haar al langer. Ik heb contact met haar gezocht in verband met een albumopname. Sindsdien werken we regelmatig samen.” Hieronder is een video te zien van een gezamenlijk optreden onder de noemer Orient Express Live.

Ze is in Istanbul geboren, en zingt in maar liefst tien verschillende talen: Şevval Sam, de 37-jarige dochter van de beroemde Turkse zangeres Leman Sam. Ze zingt, schrijft, acteert en presenteert. “Ik ben geen persoonlijkheid uit de bladen, dat wil ik niet zijn. Als ik teveel praat, kun je me niet meer horen. Ik kijk zelf bijna geen televisie, ik wil geen lege dingen zien. Daarom doe ik ook niet mee aan elk willekeurig televisieprogramma, maar treed ik enkel op in serieuze programma’s.” Het publiek waardeert dat. “Ze houden van mijn moeder, en ze vertrouwen mij,” zegt ze met een oprechte blik in haar zeekleurige ogen.
Wellicht is dat ook de reden dat Şevval Sam in net zoveel talen als stijlen succesvol is, van klassiek tot volks- en popmuziek. “Soms verwar ik mensen met verschillende muziekstijlen. Op mijn debuutalbum zong ik klassieke Turkse liederen, op mijn tweede cd Istanbul Secrets werkte ik samen met internationale artiesten en zong ik in het Engels, Frans en Turks. Deze mix vind ik erg interessant, ik kan mijn persoonlijkheid zowel in Turkse als Palestijnse liederen of Joodse slaapliedjes stoppen. Ik zie muziek als een manier om mensen met elkaar te verbinden. Voor mij is muziek net als acteren: alsof ik een andere jurk aantrek. Mensen zijn dat gaan begrijpen.”
Voor Turkey Now! komt ze in april voor het eerst naar Nederland. Vorig jaar heeft ze in België opgetreden, in Gent. “In de zaal waren zowel Belgen als Turken aanwezig, toen ik een Armeens nummer startte, kreeg ik een reactie uit de zaal van iemand die enkel Turkse nummers wilde horen. Ik zei hem dat hij dan beter kon weggaan, omdat ik nog meer Armeense nummers wilde doen. Uiteindelijk hebben we wel vier uur daar opgetreden. Er bestaan zoveel mooie liederen, dat ik moeite heb mijn concerten te beëindigen!”
Şevval Sam komt in april naar Nederland, om Turkey Now! af te sluiten met een concert in De Meervaart.

Fashion show Willem de Kooning Academy featuring Hatice Gökçe
De Bijenkorf, in collaboration with the Willem de Kooning Academy, Zadkine College and Kosmopolis Rotterdam, will present a fashion show with students' work. As part of the Turkey Now! Festiaval the Willem de Kooning Academy has invited the Turkish designer Hatice Gökçe to create a special collection with a select group of students. This collection will be showcased on both days in an explosive fashion show. On Saturday the fashion show will be musically enhanced by some musicians from the Ahirkapi Orkestra, a foretaste of their concert at 8.15pm at De Doelen on the same day.The fashion project and show are an initiative by Kosmopolis Rotterdam.
Photo exhibitions Otto Snoek & Robert de Hartogh
The arrival in the Netherlands of economic migrants from Turkey, and the relationship that has since developed with Germany, Turkey and other countries, is the theme of this double exhibition by Kosmopolis Rotterdam and the Historisch Museum. The museum has selected works by photographer Robert de Hartogh. In the '60s he was one of the first to photograph Turkish guest workers and their work and living conditions, family reunions and assimilation. Otto Snoek was commisioned by Kosmopolis Rotterdam to create fifteen pictorial stories of entrepreneurs, artists and managers in Rotterdam, the German Ruhr area and Istanbul. They share a Turkish background and their lives encompass a much larger network than those of birthplace or residence. NRC correspondent Steven Adolf wrote the accompanying texts.Otto Snoek's exhibition is in the Afrikaanderpark. Playful reading: The House of Silence through cultures and ages
Sit down with Frans-Willem Korsten, professor of Literature & Society from the Erasmus University and actors from The House of Silence by Onafhankelijk Toneel. At this event the book The House of Silence by Orhan Pamuk will be discussed with a group of around 12 key figures from the Turkish and other communities who discussed the book with Frans-Willem Korsten during two previous meetings. This reading project is a collaboration between Kosmopolis Rotterdam and O.T. Theater. Huub Laurens is creating a film report of the project. The readers, their friends and visitors to the session receive a € 2.50 discount on tickets to the performance of The House of Silence in the O.T. Theater on Sat. 20 (premiere), Wed. 24 , Thurs. 25 or Fri. 26 February.
Karsu Dönmez
This multi-talented musician is more than the Turkish Nora Jones
Her stellar career began in her parents' restaurant in Amsterdam, where she sang and played piano. She has since performed twice in the renowned Carnegie Hall of New York. From an early age Karsu Dönmez was fascinated by piano music. After completion of her high school diploma she studied jazz in Amsterdam, majoring in piano and singing. For three years she had singing lessons with none other than Esra Dalfidan, a renowned name in jazz. Karsu has been compared to Nora Jones. But she has gone further on her own path. She writes and composes her own songs and is currently working on an album with a jazzy and bluesy character. In her songs, Karsu manages to fuse blues, fado, jazz and funk in a surprising manner. Her piano playing switches effortlessly between classical, jazz and Oriental sounds. Karsu also sings Turkish songs. She gives her audience goose bumps with her emotional ballads and moving singing style.

Powerful jazz fusion is the Erman Dirikcan Trio trademark. Guitarist Dirikcan plays a fretless guitar and makes ample use of electronics. The resulting music is unexpectedly laidback, but never boring. Catchy rock and funk grooves feature in the sound mix. Their versatility and instrumental technique make this trio an innovative and exciting group who merge experiment with accessability. Erman Dirikcan plays guitar and shares the stage with Benedik Kiss on bass and Tuur Moens on drums.

Family concert featuring Esra Dalfidan and the Kennemer Youth Orchestra
In Darbuka Dum! by the Amsterdam-based Turkish composer Selim Dogru, singer Esra takes you on a musical journey through Turkey. Esra is on holiday in Antalya and is woken one night by a strange sound. Is it real or just a dream? She gets out of bed and follows the sound. She searches for hours. Just before sunrise she finds the source of the sound in the middle of the forest. It comes from a man with long black hair who is playing a magic drum: the darbuka. As soon as the man sees her he stops playing. Esra was totally mesmerised by his playing. She couldn't move, talk or even think. Suddenly the man disappears. Since that night Esra has been searching for the man. To listen to his music. She asks everyone and searches everywhere, including different parts of Turkey and Istanbul, but cannot find him. She doesn't give up and begins a journey: to China, Africa and Australia and eventually to a concert hall in the Netherlands.
In the weeks prior to the show, the Sound Garden of the Muziekgebouw aan het IJ will organise darbuka workshops for primary school students, in collaboration with performers from the show.
Tombaz - Café Chantant
Tango from Istanbul
Turkish tango? It exists. Tombaz was founded by married couple Emirhan Tuga and Meral Ari-Tuga. Tombaz carries you back to Istanbul of the 1930s, the time when Atatürk laid the foundations for a modern Turkey. Tombaz gives a new lease of life to various old, nearly forgotten music styles. Tombaz performs moving and melodious tangos as well as cabaret-like cantos, operetta numbers and jolly songs about women who can drink litres of alcohol. The songs are supplemented with poems, sketches and dance. Tombaz presents the program in a relaxed, informal atmosphere. The group is comprised of seven musicians from Turkish and Dutch descent.

Rhythmic, energetic, sensitive jazz
Fidan is a quintet featuring the Turkish-German singer Esra Dalfidan. Esra studied music therapy in Germany until she began her singing studies in 2001 in the Netherlands. She graduated from the Amsterdam Conservatory two years ago. Her voice and jazzy compositions are energetic, rhythmic, sensitive and incorporate a pleasing mix of Turkish, European and American influences. With Fidan she is currently conquering the Dutch jazz world. She works with musicians Franz von Chossy on piano, Tomas Merlo on double bass and drummer Uli Genenger. Renowned clarinettist Tobias Klein plays clarinet and saxophone. Esra sings and plays electronics.

Slotconcert Turkey Now! 2010: Sevval Sam
Na een korte carrière als actrice, neemt Sevval Sam haar debuut Sek op in 2006. Met de gepassioneerd gezongen klassieke Turkse liederen heeft ze direct groot succes. Op haar tweede cd Istanbul Secret's werkt ze samen met internationale muzikanten als Rob Garza, Benjamin Escoriza en Radio Tarifa. Sevval Sam zette haar succes voort ook met liederen uit de gevarieerde volksmuziek en is zonder enige twijfel een van de populairste Turkse zangeressen van het moment. In 2007 kreeg ze de prijs van beste zangeres van de Yildiz Universiteit in Istanbul. Haar laatste soloalbum Karadeniz (Zwarte Zee) is opgedragen aan Kazim Koyuncu. Onlangs werkte ze met andere groten als Sezen Aksu, Ajda Pekkan en Funda Arar mee aan het cd-project Güldünya Sarkilari, met als doel huiselijk geweld tegen vrouwen onder de aandacht te brengen. In Turkey Now 2010 brengt Sevval Sam een gevarieerd programma van poëtische songs uit Anatolië, Istanbul en de regio rond de Zwarte Zee.

Prachtig onthaast sfeerbeeld van meltingpot Istanbul
Muezzin Musa wordt verliefd op zijn buurvrouw, de katholieke verpleegster Clara. Het verhaal wordt nog uitzonderlijker als Musa Yakup ontmoet, die ook een band met Clara blijkt te hebben. Rustig, in een aangenaam ritme en met oog voor detail schildert de film diverse ongewone personages. Je ziet een prachtig sfeerbeeld van de meltingpot die Istanbul zowel in cultureel als in religieus opzicht is. De ontmoeting tussen het Christendom en Islam wordt fraai belicht zonder dat dit een overheersend thema wordt. Dit sterke debuut van Mahmut Fazil Coskun valt enorm op tussen de vele aanstormende cineasten uit Turkije. Uzak ihtimal (2009) is een onthaast, eenvoudig verhaal met veel aandacht voor de details van het alledaagse leven van een eenzame man. Turkish author Pamuk creates a compelling account of the doubts and ideological confusion is his country during the turbulent 80s, in which the country seeks a balance between Western and Eastern values, between nationalism and left-wing ideologies. Every year, three grandchildren spend their holidays with their grandmother Fatma. They cross paths with Hasan, the son of an illegitimate child of Fatma's late husband. Hasan joins the nationalist youth movement because he is unable to find his place in the world of Western values in which Fatma's grandchildren are so at home. A catastrophic conclusion ensues.

Mafia-like play with Tarantino-touch
Hysterical story in which the testosterone levels of seven men reach excessive heights. The cause is the wife of one of the men. After her wedding the men get together in a café and it becomes apparent that some old accounts still need to be settled. A rapid succession of accusations and confessions follows. Positions of power shift continuously. The audience slowly comes to terms with the relationships between the various characters. The performance combines a mafia-style setting with a Quentin Tarantino atmosphere. Testosteron feels like a rollercoaster ride. Strong performances and many rapid jokes define this thriller-like, intelligent comedy.

Theater Rast – Eleni en Roos
Eigentijds drama van Şaban Ol tegen achtergrond van Grieks-Turks conflict
Twee jeugdvriendinnen, Eleni en Roos, beide voormalig variété artiest, zijn genoodzaakt hun huis in de oudste wijk van Istanbul te verkopen. Terwijl ze hun overwegingen doornemen, praten ze over ouderdom, dementie, euthanasie, seks en mannen. Langzamerhand komen onthullingen over hun gezamenlijke verleden naar boven drijven die ze niet van elkaar wisten. Er begint een kat en muisspel over de waarheid en leugens tussen deze twee dames. Deze nieuwe toneeltekst van Şaban Ol die de productie ook regisseert, speelt zich af tegen de achtergrond van de etnische conflicten tussen Grieken en Turken in het Istanbul van vijftig jaar geleden toen vele Grieken de stad ontvluchtten.
Türkü Bar: Rojin
Koerdische etnische muziek, maar geen purisme
Als Koerdische, afkomstig uit Adana, had Rojin bepaald geen rijke jeugd. Ze was vastbesloten haar artistieke talent te ontwikkelen en vrij snel na het afronden van haar conservatoriumopleiding in Ankara sloot ze een contract met Sony Music. In 2003 verscheen van haar tweede album Si op single en dat was een grote hit. Dit was van grote betekenis voor de ontwikkelingen van Koerdische etnische muziek. De muziek van Rojin heeft een volks karakter maar op haar meest recente cd Deq Dövme geven de hectische gitaren de songs soms een stevige rockondergrond mee. Rojin schrijft veel nummers zelf maar vertaalde ook werk van Loreena McKennit. Op haar platen zingt ze ook Turks, maar merendeels Koerdisch. Maar Rojin is dus geen purist. Net zo makkelijk flirt ze met Indiase muziek op haar laatste cd. Rojin is een eigenzinnig talent dat niet de makkelijkste weg kiest, maar wel succesvol is.
Serkan Çagri Ensemble and Yildiz Ibrahimova
Adventurous vocal duo explore the boundaries of jazz, classic, folk and avant-garde
Serkan Çagrı is a young, extremely talented and by now world famous clarinet player. Yıldız Ibrahimova is a Bulgarian singer with Turkish roots. Like Greetje Bijma, she is primarily a vocal artist with an impressive vocal range of four octaves. In the Balkan Jazz project they delve into traditional music from the Balkans to Anatolia. They have a repertoire that varies from romantic gypsy numbers to East European folk songs. They mix authentic ethnic rhythyms with contemporary jazz, classical music and avant-garde, with room for sensitive passages as well as lively improvisations. In addition Çagrı also demonstrates his talents on the chalumeau, a baroque precursor to the clarinet. In Germany and Belgium they received rave reviews and standing ovations.
Ahirkapi Orkestra
Great gypsy orchestra from Turkey mixes Arabesque and gypsy swing
Thrace lies between the Black Sea, the Aegean Sea and the Sea of Marmara. This area, which is historically and culturally rich, was once linked to the Balkans. It is little wonder that this great gypsy orchestra comes from Ahirkapi, which for centuries has been the traditional gypsy district of the Thracian part of Istanbul. The Ahirkapi Roman Orkestrasi has appeared at numerous festivals and performed together with stars of Balkan music such as Goran Bregovic. Their untitled debut CD has a gorgeous sound that is right between Arabesque and gypsy swing. The mood changes from deeply melancholic to delightfully groovy. The concert is followed by a Gypsy Dance Party in the Marble Hall of the Tropentheater. At De Doelen too there will be opportunity for those who want to dance after the intermission.
Double concert: Pera Fasil Ensemble with Nurettin Çelik & Coşkun Sabah
Music from Ottoman palaces and songs about Istanbul's nightlife
Fasil is a slightly classical but at the same time secular music style that is once again very popular in the trendy nightlife neighbourhoods of Istanbul. The music has its roots in the Ottoman Empire. In those days fasil music was heard in palaces and in the homes of affluent Turks. A typical fasil concert resembles a western suite in composition, with rhythms that increase in intensity. Nurettin Çelik is one of the most admired interpreters of fasil. The performance by the Pera Fasil Ensemble is preceded by a shadow play featuring Karagöz and Hacivat. They provide an amazing introduction to the concert, in a manner that was common in Istanbul of old.
After the intermission comes a performance by Coşkun Sabah, widely regarded as the one of the best ud players in Turkey and also a very popular singer. In his songs he will primarily sing the praises of the Istanbul nightlife. Sabah released his CD debut in the '80s and sold 2.6 million copies. It's a record that seems unbeatable.
Kibariye and Rosenberg Trio
Astounding cross-over of the highest quality
Singer Kibariye is an absolute superstar in Turkey.
Kimbilir was a hit soon after her first performances in Istanbul in 1980. Since then she has released more than twenty (!) CDs. Kibariye has a Roma background, is familiar with many styles and shifts primarily between Anatolian folk music, Roma repertoire and Arabesk. Everyone in Turkey has heard of her and she is very popular on Turkish Hyve.
Outside of the Turkish community her name is unknown. This is about to change now that she is going to perform with the gifted musicians from the Rosenberg Trio. Kibariye and the Rosenbergs share more than their background, as they all possess an amazing musical versatility. The gypsy jazz of master guitarist Stochelo Rosenberg and his cousins on rhythm guitar and double bass provides an exciting setting for Kibariye's supple vocals. The opening concert of Turkey Now! is an astounding cross-over of the highest quality.

Spiritual kaleidoscope of Istanbul
The fascinating entrance to the Orient is a captivating melting pot of people and cultures. Fragments of this kaleidoscope are presented in Istanbul Sacrée, which features in the Turkey Now! festival 2010. You can see and hear the spiritual and religious music of the Greek, Armenian, Jewish and Islamic communities. The music that is still performed in churches, synagogues and mosques is a centuries-old tradition. Although these types of music differ in many ways, they share many unexpected elements. It is strange to recognize Islamic hymns in music from the Synagogue and surprising to hear Gregorian sounds in Islamic music, evidence of a shared Ottoman past. It emphasises the colourful and intricately interconnected society of Ottoman Istanbul. A renowned ensemble from Istanbul, featuring eighteen musicians and singers, brings the colourful music of Istanbul Sacrée to the stage during Turkey Now! 2010. The artistic direction is in the hands of renowned brothers Fahrettin and Feruh Yarkin who have dazzled during previous breakthrough Kulsan programs, and the instrumental accompaniment is provided by their Yarkin Ritm Ensemble.
