Kurdish ethnic music, but no purism

As a Kurd from Adana, Rojin grew up quite poor. She was determined to develop her artistic talent and, soon after graduating from the Ankara State Conservatory, she signed a contract with Sony Music. In 2003 she released Si from her second album and the single was a huge hit. This was significant for the development of Kurdish ethnic music. Rojin's music has a folk character but on her most recent CD Deq Dövme the hectic guitars give some of the songs a strong rock foundation. Rojin wrote many songs herself but also translated and covered songs by Loreena McKennit. On her albums she occassionally sings in Turkish, but primarily in Kurdish. Rojin is therefore no purist. She effortlessly flirts with Indian music on her most recent CD. Rojin is a determined talent who doesn't choose the easiest path, but is very successful.
