Duman: “Are you a local or a tourist here?”

The German group Lira were the first to appear on the stage in the Melkweg, whose Rancid vibes kept everyone jumping and dancing. When it seemed as though we could jump no higher, Duman’s heavy rock kept us suspended in the air like a smoke. The tracks they chose from their first album evoked scenes from the past. Kaan (Duman's vocalist) broke the chain of songs by repeatedly asking the audience: “Are you a local or a tourist here?” Besides entertaining the audience with his likable nature and interaction, Kaan's question also appeared to move onlookers. All of a sudden, one of my friends gave me a big hug and said “I am not Turkish, Inci”. He is a third-generation Turkish boy who was born and raised here. He studies at the Film Academy in Amsterdam and is a member of a Turkish rock band, as well as a native speaker of the Dutch language. In the music and scripts he writes, he examines the same question: “Are we a local here?” He has the assured expressiveness of a Dutch person and the gentle nature of a Turk. When he turned to face the other members of his group and repeat the words he had spoken to me, he had a warm smile on his face.
I feel that Duman communicated their vibe well. They understood the question of the night or rather the question created by the night. But Duman's style injects questions straight into your veins and I think the oppressing effect they have on their audience was both a strong and a positive inspiration for everyone on this occasion.
